We stayed at the Iberostar Tucan resort near Playa del Carmen. I suspect that most of the resorts in that area have private beaches that get dark at night, but I don't know. The Tucan had a really cool 28 acre tropical jungle in the middle of the resort with wild monkeys and birds and animals running around. Our little villa faced the jungle and sometimes the monkeys would come sit on our balcony. The key to the dark empty beach is to go while everyone else is at the evening show. We grabbed a beach chair and enjoyed the dark ocean (Gulf of Mexico actually). You can see the lights on the island of Cozumel from the beach at night, but you can't see it at all during the day.
